About Us
Richard Grace’s Bar, Athlone
A great venue for Home Cooked Irish Food and Hospitality!
Set in a building with an impeccable history as a hospitable hostelry, Richard Grace’s Bar, open on Sean Costello Street in Athlone has established itself as one of the leading venues in the town for great food and hospitality.
The well-known Richard Grace’s Bar, is a busy, successful bar and food venue, that is a much-loved pub where hospitality, a smile, good food and atmosphere are always waiting for you.
The core of Richard Grace’s is the main bar with its long, low, traditional format, beamed ceiling, panelling and flagged and wooden floor. A cosy snug at the front has a rugby focus, with framed jerseys and plasma screens for those all- important sporting occasions, and there are also screens dotted throughout the main bar, showing all those important sporting events.
Richard Grace himself, after whom the bar is named, is a famous local Athlone hero, a Jacobite Colonel who defended the city against the forces of the Crown in 1690. When called upon to surrender, he fired a pistol over the messenger's head, and declared "These are my terms; these only will I give or receive; and when my provisions are consumed, I will defend till I eat my old boots!"
The Colonel needn’t worry about old boots, as he would be well fed if he showed up in Richard Grace’s Bar these days! Under the guidance of Kerry man, Gavin O’Shea, Richard Grace’s has an extensive food offering from breakfast to lunch and dinner are served in Richard Grace’s Bar, with service to the table and wide-ranging menus showcasing Irish dishes and fine local produce. The team running Richard Grace’s also have a secret weapon in store – the boss’s mother! A seasoned baker, the proprietor’s, mother Ann O’Shea produces all the desserts in-house, baking what has become established favourites in town from Malteasers Cheesecake to Apple Pies and producing Chocolate Brownies which make it worth the trip to Athlone alone!
“My mother is a great baker,” says Gavin O’Shea, “and it seemed like the perfect homely touch to ask her to bake the treats for our venue, Richard Grace’s. Having genuine, home-made elements to our menu underlines our philosophy of ticking all the boxes of a welcoming country pub. But we aren’t just a traditional bar – I like to think of Richard Grace’s Bar as traditional with a twist, country kitchen meets vintage chic. We have a fabulous old pub and a lovely snug with open fires but also a cool outdoors space. We have all the conventional requirements but lots of quirky touches, such as black and white movies, and thousands of interesting books for people dining alone or having a quiet pint to browse through. But it is the food that is the corner stone of our venue. We have worked extremely hard over the past years to develop a reputation for excellent food quality combined with a professional, welcoming service.
Richard Grace’s also caters for parties, groups and events. The large lounge area of the pub lends itself to such events from a party of 5 to a party of 250, Richard Grace’s has the space for your event or party. There are a range of party menu options from Finger Food to Buffets to a full 3 or 4 course meals. It is the ideal place for any kind of party.
Richard Grace’s is open for Breakfast, Lunch and Bar Food 7 days a week from 11am. Breakfast prices start from €5.00 and breakfast is served all day, everyday in the pub. Lunch runs from 12pm to 5pm everyday and with prices starting from €9.90 for a roast lunch, it is very competitive too. There is also a full sandwich and wrap menu for lunch everyday. There are also great homemade options such as lasagne and Irish stews. The excellent Bar Food menu is on everyday from 12pm to 9pm and offers a wide variety of offering including hearty steaks, fabulous fish dishes and many vegetarian options too.
