Family run Pub, for over five generations set in at the foot of the Knockmealdown mountains beside the world famous "Cistercian monastery". Great local trade and lots of visitors to the" Vee" and the" Abbey" as well.
The Power Family have been involved in running The Cat's Bar (or "The Cats", as it is known locally) for five generations.
It seems that in the last century, Mount Melleray Abbey, half a mile away, was also a "drying out" centre for alcoholics & those with a drink problem.
Many men used to travel from all over Ireland to spend a week or two in the peaceful monastic surroundings. On their way, most men could not resist one last drink in this pub before heading a little further for "the cure".
After a couple of weeks of "drying out" and probably having experienced hallucinations (knows as "The Rats") these reformed men would leave the monastery refreshed, cured & pledging never to drink again. Walking for thirty minutes or so, the first place they would reach was the road junction facing our pub ... should they choose Left for Cappoquin and the railway station or Right for Clogheen, Clonmel and beyond ... or straight ahead for The Cats & temptation!
Well sadly, many men could not resist the attraction of just one drink to cool their thirst and instead of turning left or right, crossed the road, through our doors and back into the claws of "the drink", very soon forgetting the promise they had made.
Local Melleray people nicknamed these visitors "The Rats" and as time went on, a saying became very popular around here ... "The Cats Catching The Rats".
These days, however, most of those who are tempted to stray into The Cats arrive by car or coach and are not alcoholics but tourists.
Mike and Tina, who have run The Cats since 1990, met each other while working as volunteer helpers at the local Scout's Hall near the monastery. They have three children: Cillian, Simon & Ciaran. In recent times they have expanded their business and now also offer breakfast, meals & bar snacks, which can cater for both visitors & locals.
The Cats is now quite famous around the world and many of our customers return from distant parts, bringing us gifts of cat ornaments or paintings
