Local Attractions

Galway, (population is ever on the increase), the ancient City of the Tribes, is the ideal holiday centre. It is the gateway to the incredible rugged splendour of Connemara - all of whose beauty spots and indeed those of neighbouring counties are within easy driving distance.

For the non-driver there are daily coach tours to these scenic gems of Ireland. Spend a day exploring the city's antiquities - The Lynch Window where Major Lynch hanged his convicted son in the absence of an official executioner and thereby bequeathed the word "Lynching" to the English language...visit St. Nicholas' Collegiate Church founded in 1320 where Christopher Columbus is reputed to have prayed before embarking on his voyage to discover the New World... watch the salmon make their way upstream from the Atlantic, the best vantage point being the Salmon Weir Bridge (1818).

Perhaps a day trip on Galway Bay, visiting the Aran Islands to view the relics of pre-Christian civilisations and listen to the lilting tongue of Gaelic speakers. Whatever you choose to do we feel that you will enjoy our part of the world and particularly your stay at Rockbarton Park Hotel.

Fishing: The Hotel is situated approximately 3 miles from Lough Corrib, one of Europe's finest Fishing Lakes. There is coarse fishing available all year round and the Trout Season starts on February 15th, ending on September 30th. The Salmon Season commences on March 1st and ends October 15th. There is also excellent fishing at the famous Salmon Weir in Galway and day licenses can be easily arranged. There is plentiful sea trout fishing within a short drive of the hotel.

Golfing: There is a championship 18-hole golf course a few minutes walk from the hotel.

Shooting: A days shooting can be arranged for small parties.

Riding: There are good stables close to the hotel with trekking available (April to October).
