BOOTHOUSE BAR NAMED NEWSTALK BEST LOCAL 2009
19-August-2009
The Boothouse Bar in White's Cross, Upper Glanmire, Co. Cork has been named the Newstalk Best Local 2009, in association with the Vintners' Federation of Ireland (VFI), and on Friday, 14 August, it played host to a special live broadcast of Moncrieff to the nation to celebrate the win.
Over the last four weeks, Newstalk listeners from around the country have been texting in the name and location of their favourite local pub to Moncrieff on Newstalk 106-108 fm and, in what was an extremely close and exciting contest, there could be only one winner.
Voting was intense right up until the lines closed but The Boothouse Bar received enough votes to make it the clear winner in the end. The three runners-up were provincial winners, Kellys Bar, Strandhill, Co. Sligo (Connaught), The Glencar Inn, Letterkenny, Co. Donegal (Ulster) and Kavanaghs, Portlaoise, Co. Laois (Leinster).
The Boothouse Bar has been a family run establishment for the last 35 years and is now in its second generation of ownership. Current Boothouse landlord, Brian Kenny, said: "We were absolutely delighted when we heard we had won. I can't thank all the friends and customers of the Boothouse enough for their votes and support over the last few weeks. We have the most loyal group that any pub could ever hope for and it is so great and humbling to know that they appreciate what we do too.
"We are going to enjoy the celebrations with all our customers, Sean and the Newstalk crew and I have no doubt it will continue long into the evening."
Sean Moncrieff said: "We had great fun over the last month with the Newstalk Best Local competition. We knew that people throughout the country loved their local pubs but I'm not sure we were aware it was quite at this level.
"It's always nice to get out of the studio to do a show but doing one from the top local pub in the country will be something extra special. We're looking forward to it and celebrating with the deserving winners and their customers."
Val Hanley, President of the VFI, attending the celebrations, commented: "I'd like to congratulate The Boothouse Bar on being named Newstalk Best Local 2009. It is always great to see customers showing their appreciation for a pubs efforts and this crowd are definitely seem to be something special. There is certainly a great atmosphere in here today.
"We were delighted to team up with Newstalk to promote the virtues of the pub and if the enthusiastic response the competition received is anything to go by, then the pub is alive and well at the heart of communities throughout the country."
